I have a new friend. She’s bi and I’m gay and she’s aware that I’m lesbian. But since I’m new in town, I just want to get to know someone. I’m interested in her somewhat but not that strongly since I hardly know her. But over the last week, I’ve noticed she only talks much when we’re out in public. She’s lent me music and movies that she thought I’d like, but she doesn’t offer to discuss anything or hang around her apartment. I lent her some of my movies, but I don’t think she’s watched them. It appears that she may be just using me to have me drive her around for errands.

At her apartment, we’ll chat a bit while she gets ready to go. Once, when she was at my place, conversation lagged for a bit and *right* as she finished eating, she bolted and started getting ready to leave. I thought I’d said something wrong, but she doesn’t appear mad.

What gives? Don’t friends enjoy each others company or just hang out together without it involving food or errands?

We both have excellent credit.
We would pay with student loans
In lieu of purchasing, we will have to rent an apartment and use student loans to pay the rent - in our city, we are looking at somewhere between $1000 and $1500 for a one bedroom. Thus, purchasing and paying into something seems preferable to watching the rent fly out the window every month.
We were specifically looking for a program that caters to grad/professional students. We anticipate making over $300k combined in 2 1/2 years.
Please don’t answer if you can’t offer any helpful information. We know that this is not the best situation for home purchase, but are trying to work with our options.
